Examples of Heavy Rigid (HR) vehicles
HR vehicles include:
- trucks and buses with a GVM more than 8 tonnes, and 3 or more axles
- any towed trailer must not weigh more than 9 tonnes GVM
- bendy buses. Even though these vehicles are articulated, they’re treated as rigid vehicles.
- Towing: You are permitted to tow a trailer, as long as its GVM does not exceed 9 tonnes.
- Scope: A HR licence includes the ability to drive any vehicle class below it, such as LR (Light Rigid) and MR (Medium Rigid) vehicles.
- Articulated Buses: The licence specifically allows for the driving of articulated buses.
- Gearbox Conditions: Depending on the vehicle you use for your driving test, your licence may have an endorsement for either automatic/synchromesh gearboxes (Condition B) or for unrestricted (constant mesh) gearboxes.
